Background

Red Season Day, or Hallogivingmas as it is known in Mexico, is an annual holiday founded on September 17, 2005 by a man seeking to hear the sound of folding paper. Or at least that's what it says in Wikipedia. It is officially observed on the first Saturday in October. On this day a grandiose wingding ornamented with food and merriment takes place, or at the first opportunity afforded thereafter.

Purpose

It is a day in which to celebrate the beginning of festive weather; the beginning of the holiday season; and with the holidays, the beginning of giving, thanking, and more giving. It's a time to enjoy the company of family and friends in complete recreation.

It is a "people's" holiday; not invented through commercialization or instituted by any government system. A major role of Red Season Day is to bring friends together who would otherwise be with their own respective families during the holidays, often traveling out of town for such occasions. This gives local community family and friends a chance to celebrate these festivals of the season all at once, without interference to family traditions and priorities.

Panama City, Florida, United States

This was the first gathering in celebration of Red Season Day. Brian and Emily Delmar were the domestic hosts of this inaugural event, and they didn't even say they regretted it, in writing. We met for dinner. John Tate spoke a few words. Impossibly miniature fireworks almost maimed a child. Words cannot describe the experience. Actually, words could describe the experience if they wanted to, but they are on strike until after the election when they will be worth something again.

Games were available in the form of table tennis, foosball, darts, football, Frisbee, and diaper changing. There was free parking in the driveway for those who arrived early.

Thanks to all for coming, and especially to those who brought a food item to share. An extra special thank you to the couple (you know who you are) who brought extra apple pie. It was a packed house with 25 attendees large and small.

Next year's gathering will take place at Neil and Glenda Delmar's brand spanking new abode. Thank you, Glenda. Also, next year's menu will be retooled with added features and possibly more food items to choose from. Some of those features will include a notification system to remind everyone what food they registered for. In addition, once registered, you will be able to go back and change your choices up to 24 hours prior to the event. There will also be a comment section for those who want to provide appraisals of past gatherings or suggestions for future gatherings.

Pictures from this year's gathering are in the gallery section. Thank you again, and I hope everyone has a wonderful autumn and holiday season this year!

This year's gathering was to take place at the "other" Delmar residence beginning at 11:30 AM CDT. Neil and Glenda were to be honored as the hosts for this really red, wholesome event. However, due to extenuating circumstances they were unable to show us all how real hosts do it. Alas, Jeff and Kristie (the "other other" Delmars) responding as if to a call of duty stepped forth, brandishing their hosting implements and waging war against holiday complacency with all the fortitude of a military tattoo. It was swell.

Dinner was served between 6:00 PM CDT and a lot later. Everyone who arrived unexpectedly got to play a great new game this year called "Twist The Knob." In the past it was called opening the door, but we thought it was more fun with the new name.

Unfortunately we now live 1000 miles away from the Red Season Day celebration location. That means we will, sadly, have to decline this invitation. Hope we win the prize for first comment though! Great site Christian! We miss you. Danny, Rhema, and Rory

1000 miles is a long distance to travel, if we were in the 1800s and you were without a government budget. We miss you too. The good news is that you did win a prize. Just come down here tomorrow to claim it.

Mount Hatteras, Rupes Nigra, North Pole

This year's gathering took place at the Zwarte Piet residence beginning at 11:30 AM CDT. Everyone was of good cheer despite the -40 °F (or possibly -40 °C, I can't remember) indoor temperature. Even more chilling was the scene that followed the question, "Does this ice make me look fat?" Piet keenly remarked as the event wrapped up, "For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under government control." We weren't completely sure what he meant, but he did mention something about NORAD during our reindeer drawn sleigh ride.

Lunch was served between 12:00 PM CDT and 1:00 PM CDT. Regrettably we ran out of snow cones at 12:01 PM.

Lynn Haven, Florida, United States

It's time for the Red Season Day IPO. We're going public this year folks! Thanks to a small band of city planners, a plethora of grandchildren, and a man with a plan, Red Season Day will honor Neil and Glenda at the Lynn Haven park by the bay.

Lunch will be served between 12:00 PM CDT and 1:00 PM CDT.
